Nagaland observes Poshan Maah to promote nutrition in women, children

Dimapur, September 18 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dimapur ICAR Complex for NEH Region Nagaland Centre, Medziphema celebrated Poshan Maah, an initiative of ICAR-KVK and IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd) at training hall, KVK Dimapur on September 17. 

Special guest PH Tripathi, President, Bharatiya Farmers Agro Business Development Cooperative Ltd, highlighted about the importance of nutrition and appealed to all the participants to have their own nutritional garden. Chief guest Thsuvusie Phoji, ADC Medziphema updated the current situation of COVID-19 in Nagaland and Medziphema Sub-division. 

Tsungrosongla Ao, CDPO, Medziphema stressed that 30% of the children’s death in India are directly or indirectly linked to malnutrition. A total of 42 anganwadi workers and women farmers attended the programme. 

In the technical session, talks on layout of Nutri garden and Package of practices on vegetables, Nutri-Thali for balanced diet and Bio-fortified varieties in Nutrition by Imliakum Pongen, Farm Manager and Dr Moanaro PA, KVK Dimapur respectively. 130 packets of winter vegetable seeds provided by IFFCO were given to all the participants. 

CDPO Dimapur: PowerPoint presentations and discussion was held with village council, anganwadi board members and stakeholders under Dimapur (Rural) ICDS block at Social Welfare Office, Diphupar on September 16.

Bonathung Ngullie, CDPO Dimapur (Rural) chaired the programme and gave presentation on guidelines to set up nutrition gardens at village and anganwadi level and asked the stakeholders to promote kitchen gardens to avail its benefits. Chongboi Hansing, Community Health Officer Seithekema spoke on removal of stigma surrounding COVID-19, importance of nutrition and support of health services. 

Thejavizo Nakhro NCS, SDO (C) Chümoukedima who was the special Invitee at the programme encouraged the stakeholders on the importance of Poshan and promote good nutrition to children, pregnant and lactating mothers. Area coordinator NRLM, Vilika spoke on know-how of nutri gardens and success stories under Chümoukedima block. 

Jalukie: Department of Social Welfare, Jalukie block level carried out cleanliness drives on September 16 at Jalukie Town. Altogether 35 persons from Childline officials, AWW & CDPO staffs Jalukie actively participated in the drive. The participants involved in cleaning the town area, nursing home and CDPO office premises. Namhuheing, CDPO Jalukie briefed on good habits of personal cleanliness and skills development that save life.  

Kohima: Poshan Maah was observed at the office of KVK Kohima on September 17. During the technical session, Khekali Sema ACTO (Horticulture) spoke on the topic ‘Awareness on nutritional garden’ while Keviyieno Zhasa Technical Officer (Home Science) deliberated on the topic ‘Awareness on Nutri-Thali.’

A total of 56 participants attended the programme out of which 30 were anganwadi workers and 26 were farm women representing eight villages under Tseminyu sub division. It culminated with distribution of seeds/planting materials.

Kohima Tribal ICDS Project: As part of Block and Village Level Action plan for celebration of Poshan Maah from September 1 to 30, various actives have been planned and undertaken involving the various line departments with a view to generate mass awareness on the importance of good nutrition for health living especially during the time of the present pandemic. 

Special focus have been made to identify and also generate awareness about Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderately Acute Malnutrition (MAM) children which at present is given limited priority and acknowledgement and that it has to be treated as ‘Everyday Problem and not just a result of emergencies’. Also special focus is being made for promotion of #local for local through start of nutrition/ Kitchen gardens. 

As a way of awareness generation, posters pasting and pamphlets distribution campaigns are also been undertaken on different health issues such as causes and prevention of Anemia among adolescent girls and women, identification and proper care of SAM and MAM children, accelerating health through proper nutrition during COVID-19, Removal of stigma associated with COVID-19, Breast feeding during COVID-19, health and nutrition of pregnant and lactating women etc.

Various community level programmes such as VHSND, Mothers meeting, home visits by AWWs and ASHAS, demo of hand washing in AWCs, youth and local leaders meeting, PMMVY scheme are also being organised to generate awareness and mobilize community support in the fight against malnutrition.

Mokokchung: Under the initiative of ICAR and IFFCO, day-long programme was organized in KVK, Mokokchung with special emphasis on Poshan on September 17. 

Dharam Raj IAS, SDO(C) Hq as the special guest appraised the participants on benefits of having nutri garden around the households. Ilika Achumi, Technical Officer chaired the programme and welcomed the participants. Keynote address was delivered by Dr Keviletsu Khate, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Mokokchung highlighting the significance of the event. 

During the technical session, topic such as Nutri-garden, Nutri-thali and Bio-fortified varieties were shared by the resource persons Samuel Sangtam, ACTO (Agronomy), Lentinaro, Area Coordinator (Livelihoods), NSRLM, Changtongya Block and Bendangjungla, ACTO (Genetics Plant & Breeding) respectively. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Ruopfuselhou Kehie, ACTO (Entomology).

Altogether 56 participants comprising of farm women and Anganwadi workers attended the programme which was followed by distribution of vegetable seeds along with package and practices to the participants.

Phek: KVK, Phek organized awareness cum capacity development programme for anganwadi workers and farm women in association with the Department of Social welfare, Phek on September 17.

Dr T Esther Longkumer, Senior Scientist & Head Incharge, KVK, Phek briefed about the significance of the programme. Nyitso Therie, Supervisor, Department of Social Welfare elaborated on importance of nutri-garden for nutritional wellbeing of the rural society. Thujotsulu Tetseo, Supervisor, Department of Social Welfare explained the participants on Nutri-Thali for balance nutrition. 

A presentation on Bio-fortification & Bio-fortified crop varieties was delivered by Dr Hannah K Asangla, ACTO, Agronomy. Dr Rinku Bharali, CTO, Horticulture briefed the participants on package of practices for nutritionally important vegetable crops. 
Seed of different vegetables crops provided by IFFCO and planting materials of high yielding vegetable varieties produced at KVK farm were distributed to the Anganwadi workers and farm women. 

Zakhamo Sakhamo, Advisor, Phek District GB Union encouraged the gathering on nutritional gardening for boosting the health and immunity during this COVID situation. 

Village Council Chairman, Porba, Kucuveyi expressed gratitude to KVK Phek and Department of Social Welfare for organizing the programme. All together 65 participants from different villages of the district attended the programme. 

Peren: KVK Peren, under ICAR Nagaland centre celebrated Poshan Abhiyaan at Jalukie Peren on September 17 at Town hall, Jalukie. The programme started with Welcome address by Dr L Babita Devi, Programme Co-ordinator i/c. 

Theme of the programme was shared by Dr Patu K Zeliang and short speech was given by Namhuheing, CDPO Jalukie. Special guest Dr Tinojungshi in his speech stressed on the need of proper nutrition among pregnant, lactating mothers, children and adolescents in order to build a strong and robust Nation. 

During the technical session, the topic on Nutri-Thali-the importance of maintaining nutritional dish for a healthy life was presented by Yezaho Swu, DPD ATMA, Peren and topic on nutrition garden for balanced and safe diet was given by Akam Zeliang, DPD, ATMA, Peren while topic on Bio-fortified foods- a sustainable way to alleviate malnutrition was presented by Dr Patu K Zeliang, ACTO, KVK Peren. 

Seed packets donated by IFFCO were distributed to the participants. The programme was attended by 56 participants including 30 anganwadi workers including helpers and farmwomen. 

CDPO Zunheboto: A cooking competition was held where cuisines of locally available organic vegetables and fruits were prepared by the anganwadi workers under Zunheboto ICDS Project. The programme was chaired by Junito K Jimomi, CDPO Zunheboto and EAC Zunheboto Orenthung Kikon addressed the gathering. 

Amiphoto AWC, Alahuto AWC and South Point AWC were adjudged as 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners respectively by the panel of judges, which included Orenthung Kikon EAC Zunheboto, Atula Kikon DWO/DPO Zbto and Mughalu Awomi, Dist Coordinator. Cash awards and certificates were given to the winners and all the participants.

Zunheboto: KVK Zunheboto, Nagaland University celebrated Poshan Maah at KVK Zunheboto, Nagaland University, Lumami on September 17. 

In the welcome address, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, Sr Scientist & Head, KVK Zunheboto briefed the anganwadi workers and farm women about the objective of the programme. 

The details of the event were briefed by Edenly Chishi, ACTO (Horticulture) and Nodal Officer of Poshan Abhiyan. After the inaugural programme technical session on capacity building of anganwadi workers and farm women on nutrition and its requirements, importance of Nutri Garden and Nutri – Thali, Biofortified varieties was presented by Edenly Chishi.

A field visit to KVK farm was held to demonstrate the model of Nutri Garden and scientific method of nursery raising and its management by Edenly Chishi and Naropongla, Farm Manager, KVK Zunheboto.

Vegetable seeds provided by IFFCO & KVK were distributed to the participants.

Longleng: KVK Longleng along with allied departments celebrated Poshan Maah on September 17 at EBRC hall Longleng with Trongdiba Tongpi SDO (C) Longleng as special guest and Dr Lily Ngullie ACTO (A/Sc) KVK Longleng as chairperson.

Longlang CDPO, Nodal officers Longleng also spoke on the significance of the event. Lemjan Phom, DFS NSRLM presented on nutrition garden through power point. In technical session, A Namei, KVK, presented the cultivation practices of different vegetable crop.

Wokha: Under the initiative of ICAR-KVK and Indian Farmers Fertilizer cooperative limited, a programme on Poshan Abhiyaan and Kisan Gosthi was held at VDB Hall, Wokha on September 17. It was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Wokha on the theme ‘Balance diet, Healthy Life.’

Medical Officer (Ayush) Dr Zechano Ezong, stressing on the theme stated that good nutrition is one of the key components to a healthy life, a balanced diet gives body the nutrients it needs to function and for the growth and development of the body. District Project Assistant, Poshan Abhiyaan, Wokha, Annie Lotha, while highlighting on Poshan Abhiyaan, said this programme started in the year 2018 but in Nagaland it was implemented only last year. 

Later in the technical session, TO (Food Technology), Thunbgchano S Ezung dwelled on the topic Nutritional garden, Women Welfare Officer, Dr Wonchano Enny spoke on Nutri-Thali and ACTO (Horticulture) highlighted on Bio fortified varieties.

40 anganwadi workers and 60 farming women took part in the programme and varieties of nutritional garden kit/ seedling were distributed to all the participants.

Tuensang: KVK Tuensang conducted awareness programme on Poshan Abhiyan and celebrate the Poshan Maah (NUTRI Campaing-2020) on September 17 to address the malnutrition through awareness and trainings on the aspects of Nutri-garden, Nutri-Thali and bio fortified varieties to anganwadi and farm women. 
The special invitees for the programme was T Kyongo, Ex-MLA, PH Ramaikolo SBP District Lead Poshan Abhiyan, L Tonen Chang District Coordinator PMMVY, Sejong Sangtam, District programme assistant PMMVY, Village Council Chairman Kuthur village and Chingmelin Village Chairman Council. All together 30 Anganwadi and 20 Farm women and KVK official participated in the day long programme. With the initiative of ICAR-KVK and IFFCO, Seed packets and vegetable saplings were distributed to all the participants to start Nutri-gardens around household and Anganwadi centres.

Mon: KVK Mon organized Poshan Maah Programme on September 17 at KVK premises, Aboi. The programme was graced by Lithrila Sangtam, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Aboi as the special guest.  Dr. MS Sachan, Asst Chief Technical Officer (Genetics & Plant Breeding), KVK, Mon highlighted on Poshan Maah and its aims followed by release of Vision 2030 policy article by the special guest.

M Murry, Technical Officer (Farm), Imtinuksung, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil Conservation), Dr MS Sachan ACTO (GPB), Dr Paihem Michui, ACTO (Animal Science), KVK Mon were the resource persons. The topics covered the following aspects in relation to Poshan Maah programme such as models of nutri-garden, nutri-thali, bio-fortified varieties in nutrition, packages of practices of vegetables and horticultural crops and method demonstration of nursery raising followed by seed distribution to the participants. 

Altogether 47 anganwadi workers, farm women and progressive farmers attended the programme.

Kiphire: Rashtriya Poshan Maah jointly organised by KVK, Kiphire Department of Social Welfare & Department of Horticulture on September 17 at Kiphire District. 

During the programme CDPO Z Tsangkhuchu Sangtam gave a brief introductory note on Rashtriya Poshan Maah. SDO (C) Kiphire, James T Khulu Tikhir who was the chief guest apprised the farmers by encouraging them to go for kitchen garden to organic crops and the importance of having one in our own backyard. He also encouraged the organising team to have such collaborative programs even in the near future for uplifting the farming community.

A technical session was also held comprising of three topics. The topic on models of Nutri garden was taken up by SepilaSangtam area coordinator (Longmatra block, NSRLM). Talks on Nutrithali and bio fortified varieties on nutrition was taken up by Temjenna Jamir (NARI Nodal officer KVK, Kiphire). Package of practice on cultivation of vegetables and fruits were discussed by Seroba Sangtam HEA, Department of Horticulture, Kiphire. 

Vegetable seeds like coriander, long bean, onion, broccoli, carrot, knolkhol, beans and tomato along with hand outs on Nutrient content in important vegetable crops were distributed to the farmers. Altogether 53 participates attended the programme comprising of anganwadi workers and women farmers.
