Akunu S Meyase, Secretary, Economics & Statistics and Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths, Nagaland briefed the media on registration procedures, stating that births and deaths reported within 21 days are registered free of cost.

Addressing a press conference in Kohima on January 21, Meyase informed that events reported between 21 and 30 days attract a late fee of Rs 20, while registrations after 30 days but within one year require written permission of the District Registrar and a fee of Rs 50.

Registrations beyond one year require an order from the District Magistrate or an authorised magistrate.

Meyase cautioned that non-reporting of births and deaths, providing false information, or tampering with records are punishable offences under the Act. The secretary also clarified that a birth can be registered without the child’s name initially, with the name being added within 12 months free of cost, or up to 15 years later on payment of a nominal fee.

Nagaland Economics & Statistics Director, Neidilhou Keditsu, said Nagaland is moving rapidly towards full digitisation of civil registration through the ORGI’s online portal (dc.crsorgi.gov.in). The online system, launched in the state on April 19, 2022, issues certificates embedded with unique registration numbers and QR codes for authentication. Of the 1,474 registration units, 889 have already been onboarded onto the portal, with the remaining units in the process of activation.

Keditsu announced that the department is working towards completely phasing out manual registration in the coming months, after which all certificates will be issued digitally. Existing manual records will also be digitised. He said the revamped ORGI portal now allows citizens to apply for and receive certificates online, delivered directly to registered email IDs and mobile numbers.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Economics & Statistics emphasized that timely registration of births and deaths is both a right and a responsibility, and essential for a transparent, efficient and inclusive system of governance.

Nagaland Economics & Statistics Additional Director, Neisatuo Puro also present at the press conference.
