Kohima | March 27 : Nagaland is still behind other states in the region as far as power generation is concerned. In an annual administrative report of the power department tabled in the assembly session Saturday by minister for power Doshehe Y. Sema, it stated that the state faces acute power shortage especially during lean season as most of the central sector generating stations in the north east region is from hydro projects.
Nagaland, despite having hydropower potential is yet to harness it mainly because of limited resources, the report said adding that the shortage of power is one of the major impediments to industrialization and economic development of the state.
The state’s anticipated demand by the end of the 12th plan is 200MW and by 2020, it could be 500MW. To meet the requirement, the department has been exploring ways and means to harness different sources of energy in the state, the report said. During the current financial year (as on February 2011), 24MW Likimro Hydro Electric Project has generated 60.72 MU which has supplemented the state’s power requirement as well as resources to a large extent.
1MW Lang Hydro Electric Project is scheduled to be completed in 2012 while 1 MW Tehok Hydro Electric Project is scheduled to be completed by 2012-13.
The department has identified 90 hydropower potentials in the state, some of these sites are under survey and investigation, the report said. Further, the state government intends to set up 1000MW Coal Based Thermal Power Plant outside Nagaland by seeking coal block allocation from GoI through the government dispensation route, the report added.
