Nagaland strengthens school safety with teacher training programme

Kohima, March 22 (MExN): PM SHRI Nagaland organised a one-day orientation programme on the Self-Defence Framework for teachers of PM SHRI schools at T M Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, with participation of 44 teachers representing 44 schools across the state.

The framework aims to promote safety, inclusivity and supportive learning environments. As per Ministry of Education norms, girls undergo a structured three-month self-defence training programme to build personal safety, confidence and resilience.

The orientation focused on equipping teachers with a comprehensive understanding of the framework, which adopts a holistic and preventive approach covering child rights and protection, mental and emotional well-being, digital safety, physical fitness and nutritional awareness.

The programme was chaired by Neivikhono, Project Assistant, DMA. A Srija, Economic Advisor, Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, and Kevileno Angami, Commissioner and Secretary, School Education, Nagaland, addressed the participants, urging teachers to act as change-makers in creating safe and inclusive school environments.

Delivering the keynote address, L Jamithung Lotha, IAS, State Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland, stressed that ensuring the safety and dignity of every child is a shared responsibility and called for proactive measures centred on awareness, prevention and preparedness.

The programme featured technical sessions on child rights and protection, digital well-being, physical education, and mental health, along with an interactive session on real school challenges. A session on the PRASHAST App highlighted early identification and support for Children with Special Needs (CwSN).

The programme concluded with remarks by Dr Bijano Murry, Joint Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland and State Nodal Officer for PM SHRI, who reiterated the commitment to institutionalising the framework across schools.

The orientation served as a platform for capacity building, knowledge sharing and collaborative learning, reinforcing PM SHRI Nagaland’s commitment to holistic education and student well-being.
