KOHIMA, AUGUST 14 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, has issued a weather update warning of moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in most districts of the state until August 19.
According to the NSDMA, on August 16, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in Kiphire, Phek, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mokokchung and Kohima. On August 17, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Longleng, Niuland and Kiphire are forecast to receive heavy rain, while the remaining districts will likely see light to moderate rainfall, which may intensify during the period.
The NSDMA cautioned that lightning strikes and high winds could disrupt communication and connectivity. It further warned that due to high precipitation in the hill sector, the state’s lowland and foothill districts — including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli — are vulnerable to inundation, waterlogging and flash floods.
In light of the current flood situation, the NSDMA has advised low-lying districts to take precautionary measures, including keeping valuable documents and items in safe lockers, evacuating if advised by authorities, checking for gas leaks, avoiding food that may have come in contact with flood water, avoiding entering or driving through flooded areas, disconnecting and placing electrical appliances above ground level, boiling water before drinking or using chlorinated water, and staying alert to open drain holes or flood channels.
“The NSDMA, Home Department urges the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period,” the advisory stated, adding that all District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments should remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon season.
For emergencies, the public can contact the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) at the toll-free number 1070.
