Dr Zavise Rume speaking at one day seminar on “Professionalism in teaching” in Kohima

Seminar on ‘professionalism in teaching’ in Kohima
Kohima, December 10 (MExN): A one day seminar on “Professionalism in teaching” was held at State College of Teacher Education (SCTE) Kohima on December 9 last.
Speaking at the seminar as resource person, Dr Zavise Rume, Professor, State Council of Educational Research &Training (SCERT) Nagaland said that many teachers are confused with their own profession.
“There are too many unprofessional teachers. Because, many teachers have not understood teaching as professional,” he said. Professionalism is not happening in teaching. That is the reason why many teachers choose to adopt malpractice of proxy teachers, he said.
Dr Rume felt that the subject matter of professionalism in teaching should be introduced as an integral part of Teacher Education program.
“Teachers professional organisations must develop professional code of ethics for teachers and enforce them,” he said adding “Teachers must strictly comply with the code of ethics. “
He said that “Teachers must teach and students must study” must be the principle of our education system as it was expressed in the National Education Policy.
Teachers must take oath to make a commitment to teach and not to engage in any other work. Likewise, students must make a commitment to only study and learn and not to engage in any other works, he said.
Earlier, the seminar was chaired by Dr K Runi Nakro, vice principal SCTE while keynote address was delivered by Dr. Elizabeth, principal, SCTE, Kohima. The seminar was held in coordination with Guidance & Counseling Cell, SCERT.
