Nagaland: Two held in Phek for alleged extortion bid

Phek, August 12 (MExN): Phek Police on August 12 apprehended two persons for allegedly demanding money from truck drivers in the district. According to Phek Police, the arrests were made after a team rushed to the spot upon receiving information about the extortion attempt, allegedly by members of Naga Political Groups.

The police identified the duo as Velato Vero (25), reportedly a Lieutenant of NSCN/GPRN (Akato), and Yevevo Vero (24), a Razapeu of NSCN-K (Isak). Originally from Chekopeta village, both are currently residing in Hebron 1, Phek Town, the police said. During the operation, a total of 54 demand slips and two mobile phones were recovered and seized from their possession, it added.

As per the police, a suo motu FIR has been lodged at Phek Police Station under Sections 308(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 7 of the Nagaland Security Regulation, 1962 (NSR), and further legal proceedings are underway.
