Nagaland’s Commissioner Rovilatuo Mor said that suggestions have been pouring in regarding the amendment of the nomenclature of “Goan Bura”(GB) for towns as their area of functioning and responsibility are basically confined within their respective town jurisdiction and usage of the term “Goan” (village) may not be appropriate.
The suggestions include “Town Elders” or “GB (Urban)” or “Town Bura” or “Town GB,” said Mor while speaking at the recently concluded 30th general session of Nagaland GB Federation at Phek town.
Mor stated that GBs have been in existence since the British era and apart from their appointment in villages and in course of time Town GBs were also appointed against those administrative HQs/Town in existence at that point of time.
This practice continued to percolate to various Administrative Headquarters as and when created, from time to time, he said.
In fact on creation of any administrative HQs, GBs are the first to be appointed as agency to the government for administration, he added.
Meanwhile, Mor said that the GBs Federation also have a Constitution duly adopted by the general session on October 14, 2010 and approved by the State government.
Accordingly, he maintained that till any further amendment, the provisions of the Constitution have to be adhered to in functioning of the Federation to avoid any controversies.
