Nagaland: Villagers called to champion cause of wildlife

Dimapur, October 8 (MExN): The Wildlife Division, Dimapur observed Wildlife Week 2020 at Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary and Elephant Reserve, Mon district by organising an awareness programme on ‘protection and conservation of wildlife’ and carrying out cleanliness and plantation drive.

A press release stated here that the awareness programme saw the participation of village council from fringe villages of Lower Tiru village, Upper Tiru village, representatives of village eco-development board, Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) based at Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary, Chairman of NGO Greensons and officers and staffs of Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary. 

In the keynote address, Tokaho H Kinimi, IFS, Wildlife Warden Dimapur solicited the support, cooperation and assistance of the fringe villages in protection and conservation efforts. He said that the balance of nature should not be destroyed and appealed for peaceful co-existence with wildlife and nature. He said, “Forest provides us with clean air, water and shades beside is a home to many species of birds and animals and so it is one’s bounden duty to do their own bit to protect and preserve it.” 

He further said, “of course people living in villages depend on forests for fuel wood and food for survival but that is no license to be reckless with the natural resources. Balanced, sustainable and minimum human interference, he said is the key to sustenance.” He appealed the participants to plant more trees for every tree cut down and champion for the cause of nature and wildlife.

Short speeches were delivered by Tapong, Chairman eco-development board, Upper Tiru village, Nokham, Chairman Lower Tiru Village Council where they assured the department of their cooperation in protection and conservation of nature and wildlife.

Jess T Murry, Chairman Greensons spoke on the importance of forest and wildlife. He said that the people living in fringe villages of Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary are privileged with enjoying unlimited free fresh air which could not have been possible without the Sanctuary. He appealed the participants to cooperate with the department and preserve and protect the abundance flora and fauna of the region.

The programme started with invocation by Heiwiang Konyak, Lower Tiru Village while the vote of thanks was pronounced by Chuba, Officer-in-Charge, Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary. It was followed by cleanliness and plantation drive.
