Nagaland wants 20 more Assembly Constituencies added

DIMAPUR, APRIL 10 (MExN): Industries and Commerce Minister H Khekiho Zhimomi said in the interest of the people, Nagaland should accommodate 20 more assembly constituencies to the existing number of 60 seats. On being asked if there should be more representation to the Lok Sabha, he said Nagaland ought to be represented by five members in the lower house of Parliament. The same should apply for the Rajya Sabha, he said. Presently, both Houses of Parliament are represented by only a member each.

Speaking after the conclusion of a thanksgiving ceremony at Dimapur yesterday, the NPF heavyweight said the drawing of constituencies in Nagaland had earlier been done without taking into proper account the geographical or demographical conditions. The demarcation of constituencies had earlier been made basing on political grounds, he said.

However, it may take some time for Khekiho’s wish to materialize with Chief Election Officer Lalthara informing that Parliament has passed an Act which disallows the increase or decrease in the number of seats till the year 2026.

Concurrently, Nagaland Lok Sabha MP W Wangyuh Konyak today said the draft seeking more representation from Nagaland is yet to be passed by Parliament. His voice as the lone representative of Nagaland also serves as a detriment to him being heard on the issue, Wangyuh said at a press conference held here at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur.

Saying that Khekiho’s contention was true, the Lok Sabha MP said the Industries and Commerce Minister’s wish could come true if the Parliament accepts the draft as a bill.
