In what could be considered as an achievement for the state government, Nagaland has recorded the lowest infant mortality rate (IMR) in the country according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin.

As per the bulletin released by Registrar General of India, Nagaland recorded 4 deaths per 1000 live births during the reference year -2018.

In addition, the state had the second lowest birth rate as well as death rate in India at 12.9 and 3.5 respectively.
Madhya Pradesh with an IMR of 48 was highest among the states and union territories in India, followed by Uttar Pradesh (43) and Assam 41.

Nagaland's IMR has been gradually declining over the years. In the previous SRS Bulletin, with 2017 as the reference year, the state IMR of 7 was lowest in India.

While other states/UTs have improved thereafter, a decline by 3 for Nagaland ensured that it retained the best performer tag in terms of bringing down IMR.

Overall, the bulletin informed that the IMR has declined significantly over the years from 129 in 1971 to 32 in 2018. The largest decline in IMR has been registered by Mizoram with a decline from 15 to 5, and was second after Nagaland. Sikkim, Goa and Kerala shared the third spot with an IMR of 7.

Widely accepted as a crude indicator of the overall health scenario of a country or a region, IMR is defined as the infant deaths (less than one year) per thousand live births in a given time period and for a given region.

According to the data, the national death rate stood at 6.2 with Chhattisgarh recording the highest death rate in the country at 8, while Delhi had the lowest at 3.3.

Death rate is defined as the number of deaths per thousand population in a given region and time period and birth rate is the live births per thousand population in a given region and year.

The SRS is a large-scale demographic survey for providing reliable annual estimates of Infant mortality rate, birth rate, death rate and other fertility & mortality indicators at the national and sub-national levels.
