Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan awareness prog held in Longleng

LONGLENG, AUGUST 23 (MExN): A Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (Drugs Free India Campaign) awareness programme was held at Government High School, Yachem, on August 22. The event was jointly organised by the District Administration Longleng, Longleng District Legal Service Authority, and the Medical Department, stated a DIPR report. 

The programme commenced with an invocation by Pastor Yachem Baptist Church, Rev Adao Phom. Medical Officer Dr. Visino Nakhro and Deputy Legal Aid Defence Council representative P Monyei Phom served as resource persons.

Dr Nakhro highlighted that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, launched by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in August 2020, is a national movement against drug abuse focusing on awareness, prevention, and treatment. She emphasized the alarming rise of substance abuse among youth and its devastating consequences for individuals, families, and society.

Dr Nakhro covered various topics including the cycle of addiction, categories of psychotic substances, signs and symptoms of abuse, and available support services. She urged youth to avoid bad company and communities to support those struggling with addiction, emphasizing that “addiction is not just a crime but a disease that needs compassion and treatment.”

P Monyei Phom discussed legal aspects including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, punishments for drug offenses, and types of drug abuse prevalent in Longleng district. She emphasized that punitive measures alone are insufficient and called for collective societal responsibility to make Longleng a drug-free district.

The programme, chaired by EAC Yachem C. Tsalimse Sangtam, concluded with remarks by AHM GHS Yachem Ashutosh Samal and a benediction by Pastor Noksosang.
