‘NE market potential gateway to East and Southeast Asia’

Dimapur, July 4 (MExN): The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), North East Initiative, Guwahati, and Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS), New Delhi, co-organized an interactive session on Enhancing Business Linkages with Southeast Asia  and China at Hotel Nakshatra on July 4, 10:00 am.
M. K. Saharia, Chairman of ICC North East Initiative in his welcome address stressed on the geo-economic potential of the North Eastern region as a gateway to the East and Southeast Asia, and the importance of integrating the region through cross-border market access. Saharia stated that the North Eastern region could become the bridge between the Indian economy and the fastest growing and dynamic region in the world. He stressed on the importance of the interactive session as being a special focus to find ways and means for a better regional geo-political co-operation with South East Asian Countries and China. The emerging recommendations would then be submitted to the Ministry of DoNER, Ministry of External Affairs and State Governments of the North East, stated a press note.
The note also stated that Romeshwar Singh, OSD Trade & Commerce, Govt. of Mizoram and project Advisor said that a GIS Master-plan needs to be penned down in order to implement proposals in relation to developing trade linkages with SE Asian Countries. Also, Dr.Suba Chandran, Director IPCS, mentioned that in order to link NE Region with SE Asia inputs on connectivity situation from various corners needs to be clubbed together. At the same time the most important thing/things (commodities that has import and export potential) which can be taken from NE Region needs to captured. Security concern or situation should also be taken into account. Of some of the most potential and important commodities (export/import), Kamesh Salam, Former President, World Bamboo Organization highlighting on the importance and benefits of bamboo mentioned that Bamboo is a green linkage between NE Region and SE Asia. In spite of its great potential not much attention / thought is given to it. He specified that though known as the Poor Men’s timber bamboos can help in integrating rural population with the modern industrial development
All the prominent speakers of the session applauded ICC, NE Initiative and IPCS’s efforts in organizing this interactive session which they believe will pave way for chalking out a roadmap for developing trade linkages with the SE Asian nations including China, in near future.
The session was attended, among others, by P. P. Shrivastava, Member, North Eastern Council, Shillong, Ambassador Leela Ponappa, Former Ambassador to Thailand,  P. C. Haldar, former Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Member of the National Security Advisory Council and Central Govt. interlocutor for talks with insurgent groups of NE, R. Ravindran, Chairman of South Asia East Asia Group, Singapore, and Dr. D. Suba Chandran, Director of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies along with Task force Members from NE which include Dr Jayanta  Madhab, Economist amongst other besides business leaders of the northeast that includes the likes of Romeshwar Singh, , OSD Trade & Commerce, Govt. of Mizoram and Project Advisor; Dr. N.N Dutta, CMD, Down Town Hospitals Ltd; Mr. Pranab Kumar Sharma, President AREIDA and Director General, National Academy of Construction; C. Chaliha, MD, Purvanchal Enterprise; Kamesh Salam, Former President, World Bamboo Organization; and P Dutta, MD, Network Travels, the note added.
