NECU students urged to design their pathways with intention

Dimapur, May 8 (MExN): The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of North East Christian University organised a career guidance programme on May 7 with academic leader Pelesino Ane Kevichusa as the resource person.

According to a press release from NECU, Kevichusa spoke on the changing nature of careers and the importance of skill development alongside academic qualifications. During the session, she stated that students “must be weary of the misconception about the conventional courses and look at the flipside,” while encouraging them to “design their paths with intentionality and navigate with what one enjoys working with.”

She further said that understanding one’s interests and identifying individual strengths are important in shaping career direction.

Addressing employability in the present job market, Kevichusa said, “Degree without skills limits job opportunities since having a degree doesn’t promise a job.” She emphasised the need for students to equip themselves with skills in writing, speaking, research, digital fluency and AI literacy.

Highlighting the importance of self-assessment and professional growth, she said that building a good profile requires “the right degree, right skill sets and experience.” On networking, she advised students to connect with experienced alumni and seniors and make use of professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn.

Kevichusa also pointed out common mistakes made by students, including relying solely on academics, not taking internships seriously, following “the crowd’s common narrative,” and failing to build a strong portfolio. “Hence, it is important to close those gaps,” she said.

Speaking on career development, she remarked that “career paths according to her are non linear and pivots are normal.” She added that avoiding experimentation with jobs can become self-limiting since “growth comes with experience.”

She concluded the session by stating that “career evolves through experience and not one perfect decision.”

Earlier, Dr Chibenthung Yanthan delivered the welcome address, while Athoholi Chishi proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was attended by students, faculty members and staff of the university, the release stated.
