In a previous article I took on the issue of backdoor appointments and how it adversely affects how the State is run. Today, supplementing to it I would like to take on Nepotism which is equal in proportion on its negative effect on our State. Departmental exams are a huge farce with Nepotism coming into play and how it is glaringly naked. When Government Departments advertise vacancies, it is an accepted truth when people say " All the vacancies have been filled in advance and sitting for exam is just a waste of time." I myself gave a departmental exam when i was fresh out of college, I passed the written exam and faced the interview. When the results were declared my name was not on the list so I accepted the fact that I had to study more but the reality set in when i found out that all the successful candidates were relatives of the Director , Secretary, etc... of that particular department. It was just a big con-incidence right? I lost faith in Departmental exams after that and never did I make the effort to sit for such manipulated exams.
There are many young people who have a desire to serve in the government and are labouring hard, burning midnight oils, sacrificing so much to get a govt job but such meritorious students are robbed of their rights when the top officers manning the departments connive with politicians making sure only their relatives or close ones gets the jobs when vacancies arises. We all saw Nagaland is a mess and these kind of malpractices creates the mess. Often young people with no connections are on the receiving end when it comes to employment opportunities. How long will we allow evil to thrive in Nagaland ? How long? Nepotism is very wrong and it should be condemned at all cost.
A solution to it is.
1) Increase the manpower of NPSC and bring all government department vacancies under its purview. NPSC be made responsible for the exams conducted on these vacancies, free and fair examinations. It is not impossible. 2) Or set up a Staff Selection Board which will be responsible to the recruitment and conduct of examinations for all vacancies of posts which does not fall under the purview of NPSC, in other words the proposed SSB be responsible henceforth of all departmental exams. Of course the members of the proposed SSB will be selected after thorough screening.
It is a request to our honourable Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to look into the above suggestions. Our honourable CM has been quite vocal on making Meritocracy a norm in Nagaland, therefore I sincerely hope Nepotism is checked.
I sincerely hope good sense prevail in our God forsaken land. Sorry for the harsh words but that is the reality. Kuknalim.
