Tobu, January 9 (MExN): Newman Higher Secondary School (NHSS), Tobu marked a historic milestone on January 8, commemorating 50 years of service in the field of education.
The celebration was graced by Special Guest Wennyei Konyak, Deputy Commissioner, Mon; Guest of Honour Chemang Paul; and Guest Speakers Naiba Konyak, MLA 55 A/C Tobu, and A Nyamnyei Konyak, MLA 48 A/C Moka. The Jubilee Patron, Most Rev Dr James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, was also present on the occasion.
The celebration began with the traditional beating of the log drum by junior students, followed by the lighting of five Jubilee candles led by Rev Dr Thoppil along with the dignitaries, symbolising five decades of imparting knowledge and igniting the light of education in the region.
Addressing the gathering, DC Wennyei encouraged students to compete with a healthy competitive spirit and strive for excellence in all fields, while Chemang stressed the importance of hard work, willpower and determination as key ingredients for success.
Both guest speakers, Naiba and Nyamnyei, lauded the Catholic missionaries for bringing modern education to the “remote corner” of Nagaland and for nurturing young minds with discipline, values and vision.
They further requested the Bishop to initiate steps towards the establishment of a college in the near future, informed a media release from NHSS.
The Presidents of the Konyak Union Tobu and the Tobu Area Students' Union also acknowledged the tireless efforts of both past and present management and appealed to the Diocese of Kohima to establish a Newman Catholic College, citing the genuine educational needs of the region.
The NHSS Alumni President also shared his reflections.
Conveying his Jubilee greetings, Bishop Thoppil congratulated the school community and encouraged continued commitment to holistic education and moral values.
Earlier in the day, the Jubilee Monolith was inaugurated by the Special Guest and blessed by the Bishop.
The Jubilee Memorial Hall and Library were inaugurated by the Guest of Honour and Dr Haku Anshao, Medical Officer, District Hospital Mon.
Though NHSS Tobu is run by the Diocese, it remains deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Tobu and continues to serve as a beacon of learning and progress for the region, the release added.
