DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 17 (MExN): The North East Zone Cultural Centre’s (NEZCC) Stone Sculpture Garden at 3rd Mile, Dimapur got an added attraction on Saturday, September 17 in the form of a children’s play area. Completely made out of bamboo, the construction of the play area was funded by the NEZCC at a cost of Rs. 90, 000 and designed by the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency.
It was formally inaugurated and opened to the public by MLA &Advisor L. Temjen Jamir today at a programme held at the garden. “I hope this children’s park will be beneficial especially to the people of the surrounding areas and the Nagas in general,” said Jamir in his address. The park, he hoped would immensely benefit children as well as the parents as it would act as a healthy place of recreation for children while boosting their creative intuition. Instead of letting children sit in front of computers and television sets most of their free time, parents should make it a point to take their wards to recreational centres like parks. “Let us utilize the facilities provided by this park to bring great changes in the lives of children” he said while reminding all law abiding citizens to preserve and safeguard  the park like it is their personal property.
Director of the NEZCC, Som Kamei said that the initiative is, in part, an initiative to promote the varied and innovative use of the bamboo plant. Not only is bamboo easily available and its use cost-effective, it is also very much an intrinsic identity of the people of the northeast for a variety of utilitarian purposes. With the technology developed by the NBDA, it was made possible to have this play area for the children. “We at the NEZCC intend to further utilize the resources of bamboo technology which is aesthetically attached to the people of the north east region,” Kamei said while adding that the NEZCC hopes to set a trend in promoting bamboo-based products. It also plans to set up another such play area at Shilpgram in Guwahati soon.
Children of Deaf Biblical Ministry, Naharbari and Ekalavya Model Residential School, Diphupar also attended the inaugural programme.
The park will be open all days of the week except on Mondays. The entry fee for children is Rs. 5 while for adults it is Rs. 10. Concession will also be given to school students visiting in groups, albeit with permission from the school concerned.
