Maligaon, April 17 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), in collaboration with the Office of the District Election Officer, Darjeeling, organised a “Mega SVEEP” (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) programme on Friday to promote voter awareness ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections 2026.

The initiative, conducted through the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), aimed at encouraging informed and inclusive participation in the democratic process.

A major phase of the programme was held at the Darjeeling Railway Station, where railway officials, district authorities and members of the public participated in large numbers.

The event began with the arrival of dignitaries, followed by a traditional welcome with offering of khada and lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolising awareness among voters. A cultural performance by a Sherpa troupe highlighted local heritage while reinforcing the message of civic responsibility.

A signature campaign was organised at the venue, where participants pledged their commitment to ethical and informed voting.

The highlight of the programme was the flagging off of a special “Democracy Express”, a dedicated DHR train carrying voter awareness messages. The train travelled from Darjeeling to Batasia Loop, symbolising the spread of democratic values among residents and tourists.

Officials said the use of the heritage railway helped transform a popular tourist experience into an effective platform for public outreach.

The initiative reflects the joint efforts of NFR and district election authorities to enhance voter participation and strengthen democratic engagement.

NFR said it remains committed to supporting national initiatives aimed at promoting public awareness and community participation.
