Maligaon, January 7 (MExN): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) recorded a strong and people-centric performance in December 2025, significantly strengthening passenger safety, security enforcement and humanitarian assistance across the zone.
Through proactive vigilance, swift response and coordinated operations, the RPF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe, secure and compassionate rail travel during the month.
In efforts to protect passenger belongings, RPF apprehended 17 persons involved in theft cases and recovered 17 stolen mobile phones valued at approximately Rs 2.22 lakh. The recovered items were handed over to the concerned Government Railway Police (GRP) for further action.
Demonstrating exceptional alertness, RPF personnel also saved the life of a woman passenger who slipped while boarding Train No. 13125 (UP) at Guwahati Railway Station, preventing a potentially serious accident.
Humanitarian assistance remained a key focus area, with RPF rescuing 36 minor boys and girls and three women during December. They were subsequently handed over to Childline, concerned non-governmental organisations and the GRP for care and rehabilitation. RPF personnel also provided timely assistance to two pregnant women during childbirth at New Jalpaiguri and Rangiya railway stations.
On the enforcement front, five persons were arrested in cases of stone pelting on running trains. Swachhata drives led to the prosecution of 1,722 offenders for littering, with fines amounting to about Rs 2.29 lakh.
Overall, 2,669 cases were registered under the Railways Act during the month, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of 2,632 offenders and the realisation of fines totalling approximately Rs 3.36 lakh.
As part of its drive against organised crime and illegal activities, RPF arrested five touts and seized 13 railway tickets. A major crackdown on narcotics resulted in the detection of 32 cases, with the recovery of ganja, heroin, brown sugar and cough syrup valued at about Rs 3.16 crore, and the arrest of 13 persons.
In addition, 39 cases of illicit liquor smuggling were detected, leading to the seizure of 2,960 bottles valued at around Rs 2.98 lakh.
Passenger facilitation also remained a priority. RPF assisted the Commercial Department in apprehending 325 ticketless travellers, leading to the realisation of fines amounting to Rs 4.85 lakh. During the period, 293 persons were prosecuted for smoking violations, while 118 items of left-behind luggage worth approximately Rs 26.80 lakh were recovered and safely returned to passengers.
To support safe and obstruction-free train operations, RPF extended assistance to the Engineering Department in removing 115 encroachments at various locations across the zone.
