NJCF appeals for ceasefire between Kuki, Tangkhul communities

Kohima, May 4 (MExN): The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) has issued an appeal for cessation of violence between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities in Manipur, proposing a halt to hostilities from May 5 to July 5, 2026.

In a statement, the forum said the ongoing conflict has become a serious challenge to livelihood and peace, affecting children, women and men of both communities. It noted that narratives around the conflict have also been shaped by individuals outside the communities, often contributing to division.

Calling for transformation through peace, the NJCF urged both communities to give peace a chance and announced a proposed cessation of violence under a set of conditions.

The forum called for immediate suspension of armed conflict and confrontations during the period. It also urged both sides to refrain from inflammatory statements, propaganda and the spread of divisive narratives through print, broadcast and digital media, and instead focus on peacebuilding, reconciliation and respect for human dignity.

It appealed to both communities to dismantle prejudices and stereotypes that fuel mistrust, and encouraged leaders, elders and youth to promote dialogue, empathy and mutual respect in both public and private spaces.

The NJCF emphasised the need to protect vulnerable groups, calling for special attention to the safety and well-being of children, women and the elderly.

It further said the proposed cessation should be seen as a step towards long-term transformation, urging both communities to use the period to explore pathways for reconciliation, healing and sustainable peace.

The forum also called for ensuring that public movement is not obstructed during the period and for taking measures to safeguard school children, farmers and travellers so that normal life can continue without fear or disruption.

Expressing hope for peace, the NJCF said reconciliation and mutual respect are essential to restoring harmony.
