Kohima, September 18 (MExN): A delegation from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) is participating in the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) being held in Cape Town, South Africa, from September 13 to 19 as part of its annual programme.
The delegation comprises Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of NLA, along with his spouse; S Toiho Yeptho, Deputy Speaker, along with his spouse; and Khruohituonuo Rio, Secretary, NLA, stated a press release issued by the NLA Secretary.
The 69th CPC is being hosted by the Parliament of South Africa and the CPA South Africa Branch under the main theme, “Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership.” The conference brings together Speakers, Presiding Officers, Parliamentarians, parliamentary officials and other stakeholders from across the Commonwealth to deliberate on contemporary challenges confronting parliamentary democracy, governance and international cooperation. It is attended by delegates representing the wide membership of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, which brings together nearly 180 national, state, provincial and territorial Parliaments and Legislatures.
Sharingain Longkumer participated in Workshop C on “Parliamentary Leadership in Promoting Climate Adaptation and Resilience,” which focused on the growing need for Parliaments and Parliamentarians to strengthen climate adaptation measures, improve resilience and exercise effective legislative and oversight roles in responding to the increasing impacts of climate change.
S Toiho Yeptho participated in Workshop E on “Protecting Human Rights and Promoting Peace: The Role of Parliaments.”
Khruohituonuo Rio participated in the 60th Meeting of the Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SoCATT) held on the margins of the 69th CPC. SoCATT provides an important avenue for parliamentary officials to learn from one another and strengthen the institutional capacity and effectiveness of parliamentary secretariats.
The Secretary's participation provided an opportunity to engage with parliamentary officials from other Commonwealth jurisdictions and gain insights into emerging practices and innovations in legislative and parliamentary administration.
The NLA delegation's participation reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy, promoting responsible and responsive governance, and learning from the experiences and best practices of other Commonwealth Legislatures.
