NMA advisor reports ‘death threat’ over women’s reservation advocacy

Advisor to the Naga Mothers Association (NMA), Rosemary Dzüvichü, has reported receiving a death threat on the evening of September 23. The message was reportedly directed at her “and young and old feminists who have stood for women reservation.”

The threat was reportedly received through a post on a private Facebook group called “Unified Naga Land for Christ.”

In a social media post, Dzüvichü wrote: “Received a death threat message meant for me on a Facebook Naga group a few hours ago. A warning to me and young and old feminists who have stood for women reservation.”

However, she stressed that such threats would not deter her or Naga women from advocating for their rights.

“I have lived and faced many death threats throughout the struggle for holding the long-overdue Municipal elections in Nagaland and the reservation of seats for women,” she said.

“The Municipal elections have been held, and more than a hundred women now sit in the Urban Local Bodies in the state through their constitutional rights and the ruling of the Supreme Court,” she highlighted.

Stating that women’s rights are human rights, the NMA Advisor added, “Many of us have faced hatred, defamation and threats while working to see women step into decision-making bodies. Killing me with a bullet will not stop Naga women articulating about their rights.”

She also confirmed that an FIR has been filed with the Cyber Crime Police and while she informed that she is aware of the administrators of the Facebook group, the identity of the person who issued the threat remains unknown.

As per reports, the culprit has been arrested and is under police custody. This could not be however independently confirmed by this newspaper at the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, in a telephonic interview with a news channel, Dzüvichü asserted:  “I am not going to take it lying down. Why should I allow someone to come and put a bullet through me for an issue that is already in place in the state and is a state policy? To target us for women reservation at this stage and to threaten all feminists as he calls it and to put a bullet through all of us...are unacceptable.”

Following the threat, social media users have raised concerns about the group administrators approving posts without adequate verification.
