NMA memo to CM over assassination bid on Retd lady officer

Kohima, July 14 (MExN): Seeking more concrete action from the state government over the assassination bid on retired lady officer M Imtila Jamir on May 27, 2011, the Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) submitted a memorandum to the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, seeking his immediate attention and intervention into the matter, and demanded that the State Government immediately initiate prompt action through the Ceasefire Monitoring Group as a priority issue.
The memorandum appended by NMA president Abeiu Meru and secretary Lochumbeni Humtsoe, stated that after considering the magnitude of the heinous crime perpetrated on the innocent retired lady officer M Imtila Jamir, a Joint Action Committee consisting of representatives from all women organizations of different tribes has been formed to seek for justice on ‘the shocking armed violence’.
However, the memo termed as ‘highly objectionable’ over the Home Minister of Nagaland not giving appointment to the Naga women ‘citing vague excuses, despite the urgency of the matter’.  It stated that a memorandum was submitted to the Home Minister’s PS at ‘his official residence’’ on the morning of June 18, 2011 by the women leaders, “but the PS refused to accept the said memorandum saying the Minister was not at home. The Committee has viewed this very seriously”, the release stated.
"That, despite strong protests and appeals, it is most unfortunate the SIT/Police has failed to arrest the absconding culprit Mr.Worshim Kashungl till date," the memorandum said.
The memorandum asserted that the matter is even more serious as the said culprit had the courage and audacity to ring up and threaten the victim, M Imtila Jamir ‘from the same mobile number on the night of 28th June 2011 at 10:45 pm.
“The Joint Action Committee condemns that her life has been threatened on the very night the leaders of the Action Committee of the Watsu Mongdang and the Ao Senden met the Collective leadership at New Delhi at 9:30 pm. It is highly questionable that barely an hour after the memorandum was submitted to the Collective leadership for action, the culprit resorted to threatening the lady officer again,” the NMA stated.
Besides, the NMA enlightened the CM that in a meeting of all tribe representatives of women organization in Nagaland held on July 9 2011, at Kohima, the House unanimously condemned the failure to arrest the culprit and the continuing threat of violence on the traumatized lady officer.
“Therefore, considering whether sequence of events in the assassination bid an the latest incident of threatening the victim, the Joint Action Committee demands that the State Government immediately initiate prompt action through the Ceasefire Monitoring Group as a priority issue,” the memo stated.
The NMA demanded that the accomplice who is in the custody of the NSCN/GPRN be handed over to the police for action as per the law.
“We demand immediate action in adherence to the clause of the Ceasefire Ground Rules to protect the security and in the interest of the victim and family and Naga women as a whole and arrest the culprit, where he may be,” the NMA stated while expressing strong belief that the Chief Minister would stand for justice and ensure women’s right to peace and security in the state and initiate prompt action on the urgent matter placed before him.
