NMA welcomes resolution on ULB elections

Kohima, March 12 (MExN): The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) on Saturday welcomed the resolutions to hold ULB election with 33% reservation for women, as per the 74th Amendment Act of the Constitution of India.

Expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister, UDA Chairperson, Deputy Chief Minister, leaders of tribal organisations, GBs, civil societies, and political parties who were part of the state consultation on March 9, the NMA articulated its hope that the long overdue municipal elections would be held peacefully to ensure development of the state’s towns and municipalities.

“It must be noted that in the ongoing Municipal election case the NMA leaders are no longer petitioners, having withdrawn as petitioners in 2017, after the written agreement by the State government to hold the Municipal elections,” a press release from the NMA stated.

It further stated that the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), India’s largest human rights organisation has impleaded as the petitioner, while expressing gratitude for their legal intervention for Naga women’s constitutional rights.
