Kohima, March 6 (MExN): The Naga National Council (NNC) has issued a statement reaffirming the historical sovereignty of the Nagas and calling for unity among all sections of the community.
In a statement, Zapuvisie Lhousa, a member of Central Executive Committee of NNC, highlighted the foresight of the movement’s pioneer leaders in forming the Council to represent the national aspirations of the Naga people.
Lhousa underscored the historical event of August 14, 1947, when the early NNC leaders declared the Nagas an independent nation to the United Nations Organisation (UNO) and other nations, just before the British formally withdrew from their South Asian empire. He said that ‘this crucial historical fact is well known, even to India.’
Acknowledging that Nagas have endured untold sufferings and countless deaths from the atrocities of the Indian Armed Forces, Lhousa reiterated, “Still, the Nagas are committed in principle to follow the policy of non-violence and non-cooperation to protect her national rights.”
The NNC leader stated, “NNC belongs to all Nagas and all Nagas are members of NNC. From the youngest child born yesterday to the oldest surviving, all Nagas are equal in NNC.”
Lhousa made a fervent appeal to all Nagas who love and care for the nation, from the illiterate to the educated, and the intellectuals, to nurture and strengthen what he called as the “national institution that is NNC.”
