No doctor at PHC Tokiye

TRKU seeks Government’s intervention

Zunheboto, May 15 (MExN): The Primary Health Centre at Tokiye under Zunheboto district has been functioning without a doctor after the lone doctor was transferred without replacement, according to the Tokiye Range Kukami (GBs) Union (TRKU). In this regard the Union has written to the Principal Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland seeking immediate intervention and deployment of doctors to the PHC.

In the letter which was issued to the media on Saturday, the union expressed dismay that the lone doctor at PHC Tokiye was transferred without replacement at a time when “even the remote areas of the state should be logically and pragmatically prepared with the machineries to combat the pandemic.”

It also informed that the PHC has no staff members except for one nurse and no facilities to combat the pertinent challenges posed by COVID-19 as well as other diseases.

The PHC Tokiye, it said, provides health care services mainly to the inhabitants of Tokiye town in the Aghunato subdivision, and the surrounding seven villages: Viyilho, Viyixe, Khetoi, Aghiyili, Yezashi, Thokihi and Khukishe,  which has a total population of at least 10,000 people.

It said that the lack of adequate medical personnel has caused immense hardships for the people of the area, most of whom are low-income agriculturists. “There have been many instances where people have met deaths due to their inability to bear the cost of treatment outside their home. There are also many who died on the way while travelling to seek for treatment,” the union stated, while adding that the present situation has made the matter worse.

The union underscored that the lack of medical personnel is a deprivation of their right to basic needs. It said that the people of Tokiye also need health care facilities just as much as citizens living in cities and towns and asserted that “We are not demanding for all the specialized professional doctors in the PHC, but one that can attend to the urgent need of our people.”

Further stating that the condition of PHC Tokiye is deplorable and desperate, it also questioned “Who should be held accountable if anything untoward happens during the course of our ‘unified battle’ against the ‘fatal virus’?”

As such, the TRKU urged the Principal Director to intervene and address the matter immediately.
