At least 20 youths from Nagaland have been identified so far from the 126 people arrested by the police on December 21 in Noida’s Sector 63 in Uttar Pradesh in a raid on a fake call centre that cheated scores of Americans.

According to police reports, the call centre solicited money from US citizens by intimidating them with arrest by the FBI over "stolen" social security numbers, a unique nine-digit pin number given to American residents among others.

While all the arrested are reportedly employees, the masterminds of the fake call centre sham is still absconding.

Since the arrest, the Nagaland Government has been trying to facilitate the relatives/guardians/parents of the arrested Naga youths in handling the case.

Most of the arrested Naga youths come from far flung areas of Nagaland, and at present housed at Luksar jail, Noida face long jail term with FIR filed under three sections including section 420 of IPC. However, at the time of filing this report, it is learnt that a charge sheet is yet to be filed against the arrested.

Nagaland House Delhi Deputy Resident Commissioner (DRC), Kethosituo Sekhose speaking to The Morung Express on Thursday informed that 20 odd Naga youths have been identified so far. There are more to be expected- at least 30, he added.

Nagaland Govt facilitates meeting

On Thursday, a meeting between a group of lawyers and the parents/guardians of the arrested youths was also facilitated by the Nagaland Government through the Nagaland House Delhi Deputy Resident Commissioner (DRC).

Representative from the Nagaland Government and student bodies, organizations also met with the arrested Naga youths at Luksar jail on December 26.

This is not the first time that youth from North East; particularly Nagaland has been arrested in cases involving fake call centre. Only on October last, more than 20 from Nagaland were among the 31 people arrested for running a fake call centre here that duped US citizens by assuring tax benefits.

As it happens in majority of the cases, the youths from Nagaland had applied for the job in order to sustain a living and most of them come from far flung areas.

Nagaland House DRC Sekhose said Naga people, particularly youths need to be smarter and cautious instead of “just blindly jumping into a job just to get a job” while citing the latest case of the arrested Naga youth involved in the fake call centre scam.
