NPBC RRA conducts workshop on biodiversity conservation

Dimapur, February 8 (MExN): The Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) - Regional Resource Agency (RRA) organised an orientation programme under the National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) for the selected participating organizations on February 8 at the Conference Hall, NPCB Office. A press release issued by the NPCB stated that altogether 75 organizations from Nagaland took part in this programme under the theme ‘Biodiversity Conservation’.
The programme was chaired by Meren Imchen, Senior Scientific Assistant, NPCB. The resource person, Liangsi Neumai John, Director, Care-Centre for Environment & Rural Poor, spoke on the importance of biodiversity and stressed on the importance of “action”. She stated that living organisms depend on each other for survival and therefore, biodiversity, which includes our forests, wildlife, wetlands etc, needs to be conserved. She further stated that biodiversity can be conserved by having a change in our attitude and called upon all the participating organizations to actually take “action”. She also cited that the conservation of biodiversity can be brought about through everyday activities such as avoiding the use of leather, switching off electrical gadgets when not in use, avoiding wastage of water and so on and also mentioned the five Rs-Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Repair.
Rusovil John, Member Secretary & Co-ordinator, NEAC, enlightened the participants on what NEAC is about and how it is to be implemented. This year, 155 organizations spread across Nagaland will be participating in spreading biodiversity conservation both in awareness and action components. He mentioned that the destruction of forests through human activities has led to the degradation of our biological resources. Nagas have ample knowledge about the benefits of biodiversity but due to over exploitation, our resources are getting depleted. It is time therefore, all of us start conserving our biodiversity and forests so that we give a positive contribution to humanity in mitigating climate change.
