Dimapur, October 2 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee celebrated the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Dimapur District Congress Committee office. The programme was jointly organized by Minority Department and Dimapur DCC.

According to a press release from the Media Cell, DDCC, President of the National Students' Union of India (Nagaland Unit) X Chophika Sumi highlighted the contribution of Gandhi and the Congress in the freedom struggle. He mentioned that the Congress not only gave its all in getting independence from the British but also contributed so much in nation building. As per the release, Sumi is said to have “called out the hypocrisy of PM Modi where on one hand he considers Godse, Savarkar as his icon and praises Gandhi whenever he gives speech abroad.”

He pointed out how the RSS opposed the ‘Quit India Movement’ called by Gandhi in 1942 and now the same BJP-RSS wants others to prove their patriotism, the release stated.

Further, Sumi called upon the party workers to instil Gandhi’s ideals and work for the country while also paying tribute to Former Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri and reminding party workers of the ‘Jai Jawan, jai Kisan’ slogan.

Chairperson of the Nagaland Congress Minority Department Rajesh Sethi also spoke on the occasion and gave a brief sketch of Gandhi’s life while reminding the gathering to live like Gandhi, according to the Media Cell. Quoting Gandhi, Sethi encouraged party workers to change themselves first in order to bring transformation in the society. On Modi’s recent visit to the US, Sethi mentioned how PM Modi was ‘schooled’ by VP Kamala Harris on democracy, the release stated.

Sethi recalled how India was a vibrant democratic country at one time but said that “in the last 7 years, the Modi government has destroyed all the institutions.” He slammed PM Modi for “having time for photo ops” but not having time to meet the farmers who have been protesting for over 10 months.  He also highlighted how truth and independent voices are suppressed with the use of the ED, IT Dept, etc and lamented that “this is not the India that Gandhi envisaged.”

The programme was chaired by Kutoho Chishi, Working President, Dimapur DCC, the release stated.
