NPCC concerned over repeated Dimapur–Kohima highway blockages

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 16 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Tuesday expressed deep concern over frequent blockages along the Dimapur–Kohima stretch of National Highway 29, saying such disruptions cause immense hardship to the public, obstruct the movement of goods and people, and pose serious safety risks.

In a statement, the NPCC said its president and Member of Parliament, S. Supongmeren Jamir, held a telephonic conversation this morning with RP Singh, Executive Director of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), to raise the issue.

Since Jamir is presently in Brazil attending an official programme, a team of NPCC officials attempted to visit the affected site to monitor clearance progress. However, access was denied due to safety concerns. The team nevertheless engaged in discussions with NHIDCL officials near the site.

NHIDCL officials assured that the highway would be reopened by evening. They informed that mechanical clearance of the landslide debris had been completed and that the final safety inspection and formal opening were pending approval from the District Administration.

The highway has since been reopened. While acknowledging the prompt efforts of the District Administration and NHIDCL in addressing the crisis, NPCC urged that long-term corrective measures be implemented to prevent such recurring disruptions and ensure uninterrupted connectivity for the people.
