NPCC demands suspension of arrested DMC councillor

KOHIMA, AUGUST 14 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Thursday expressed shock and condemned the arrest of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Councillor Enoch Wotsa, who was apprehended by Khatkati Police in Assam in the early hours of August 13 for allegedly transporting a large quantity of alcohol in a government-registered vehicle along with two private vehicles.

In a statement, NPCC said the incident was not merely a legal violation but a “blatant betrayal of public trust.” Wotsa, who also serves as vice president of the NDPP Youth Wing in Dimapur, had brought “irreparable shame” to the people of Nagaland by misusing state resources and flouting the law, it alleged.

The NPCC demanded Wotsa’s immediate suspension from the DMC pending a full investigation and the filing of criminal proceedings against him and his associates under relevant laws. It also sought a high-level inquiry into the misuse of government vehicles for illegal activities and fixing accountability on all responsible authorities. “The ruling NDPP government must answer to the people of Nagaland for nominating individuals with such blatant disregard for the law. This incident reflects the culture of impunity and entitlement fostered under the current ruling dispensation,” the statement said.

Reiterating its commitment to ethical governance and the rule of law, NPCC said the government must act swiftly to restore public confidence and show that “no one is above the law.
