KOHIMA, DECEMBER 30 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Tuesday condemned a series of attacks on the Christian community across the country during the Christmas season, holding the BJP-led government responsible for creating a climate of fear and intolerance.
Terming the incidents as "shameful and deeply disturbing," the NPCC said the attacks on churches, destruction of Christmas decorations, and disruption of worship were a direct consequence of the "hate-filled atmosphere nurtured under the present regime."
The party strongly condemned extremist elements allegedly interrupting Christmas gatherings, using abusive language, and instilling fear among worshippers, including women and children, calling these acts violations of constitutional rights and human dignity.
Highlighting the attack on St. Mary’s English School in Panigaon village, Nalbari district, Assam, on Christmas Eve by activists linked to the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, the NPCC called it a reflection of dangerous radicalisation encouraged by the government’s silence and inaction.
The NPCC blamed the BJP and the Union government for emboldening fringe groups through divisive politics and selective outrage, saying their failure to act decisively has sent a message that hate crimes can be committed with impunity.
“India is a secular nation governed by the Constitution, not by ideology or mob rule,” the NPCC said, asserting that it will not remain silent while minorities face intimidation and religious freedoms are trampled.
The party demanded immediate and impartial investigations into all incidents of violence, strict legal action against perpetrators and organisations involved, and clear accountability from the Union and state governments.
The NPCC reaffirmed its solidarity with the Christian community and other minorities, warning that any attempt to divide the nation on religious lines will be strongly resisted.
