Dimapur, April 1 (MExN): The National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), Dimapur district, has expressed concern over what it termed the “ongoing and widespread” refusal to accept Rs 10 and Rs 20 denomination coins by shopkeepers, vendors and sections of the public across the district.
In a statement, the NPYF said that despite repeated clarifications by the Reserve Bank of India that Rs 10 and Rs 20 coins are valid legal tender, their non-acceptance continues, causing inconvenience to the public and disrupting daily transactions.
NPYF Dimapur district president Zato Sumi said the issue goes beyond inconvenience and has wider economic implications. He noted that citizens bringing such coins from outside the state are unable to use them within Nagaland due to the practice.
As a result, the coins remain unused or are spent outside the state, leading to financial loss and hampering local currency circulation, which adversely impacts the state economy, he said.
The organisation warned that if left unaddressed, the situation could undermine public confidence in the monetary system and further affect the local economy.
NPYF Dimapur district has urged the district administration to take immediate action, including issuing directives to commercial establishments to accept Rs 10 and Rs 20 coins, initiating legal action against violators, and directing enforcement agencies to ensure compliance.
It reiterated that refusal to accept legal tender is a violation of law and appealed to citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation and cooperate in ensuring smooth financial transactions.
