CHÜMOUKEDIMA, OCTOBER 10 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), supported by the National Commission for Women (NCW) and in collaboration with the Women Cell of Tetso College, organised an awareness programme on Poshan Maah on October 10 at Lorin Hall, Tetso College. The event aimed to promote awareness on the importance of nutrition and encourage collective efforts towards building a healthier and more informed society.
In his introductory remarks, Tetso College Chairman, Kvulo Lorin, welcomed the gathering and spoke on the vital role of nutrition and good health in leading a purposeful life. He also highlighted the institution’s long-term vision of introducing academic programmes in Physical Science and Sports Studies, aligning with the college’s commitment to holistic education and well-being.
Delivering the keynote address, NSCW Chairperson W. Nginyeih Konyak emphasised the initiatives undertaken by the National Commission for Women to create state-wide awareness and ensure equal opportunities for women. She drew attention to issues such as sexual harassment in the workplace and domestic violence, stressing the need for continued vigilance and institutional support to protect women’s rights.
Speaking on the significance of Poshan Maah, celebrated annually in September, Konyak said the campaign is a people’s movement aimed at promoting nutrition and combating malnutrition.
Highlighting this year’s theme, she underscored the importance of involving men in nutrition and caregiving, advocating for shared responsibility in ensuring family and community well-being. She also reiterated the need for stronger legal frameworks and effective enforcement mechanisms to support survivors of gender-based violence and foster a more equitable society.
Addressing the gathering, Chümoukedima SDO (Civil) and IAS officer, Shreyansee Jain, underlined the importance of nutrition as a foundation for empowerment and societal progress. She observed that lack of access to basic food equates to zero nutrition and expressed concern over the increasing consumption of processed and packaged foods in Nagaland. Urging the community to embrace locally available organic produce, she encouraged the adoption of balanced diets and healthy lifestyles. Jain further stressed that Poshan Maah should evolve beyond a monthly awareness campaign into a lifelong commitment to wellness and nutrition.
