NSDMA issues weather advisory

Warns of thunderstorms, heavy rain across state  from August 27 to 30

KOHIMA, AUGUST 26 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Tuesday issued a weather advisory, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate rain in several districts of the state from August 27 to 30.

The districts of Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Peren, Phek, Shamator, Tseminyu, Tuensang and Wokha are expected to receive moderate intermittent rainfall on August 30. The authority cautioned that high precipitation in the hill areas could trigger waterlogging and flash floods in lowland and foothill districts, including Dimapur, Nuiland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit and Tuli.

The NSDMA urged the public to take necessary precautions, including avoiding areas prone to lightning strikes and high winds that could disrupt communication and connectivity. Residents in flood-prone areas were advised to safeguard valuable items, evacuate low-lying zones if directed by authorities, monitor for gas leaks, avoid consuming food exposed to floodwaters, refrain from entering or driving through flooded areas, keep electrical appliances off the ground, and ensure water safety through boiling or chlorination.

Authorities were also cautioned to remain vigilant of open drains and flood channels to prevent accidents.

The NSDMA called upon all District Disaster Management Authorities and line departments to remain on high alert to protect lives and property during the ongoing monsoon season. For emergencies, the public can contact the State Emergency Operation Centre at toll-free number 1070.
