NSDMA observes International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

Kohima, October 13 (MExN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) joined the rest of the country in observing International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction under the theme 'Disaster Risk Governance' on October 13.

A press release from Principal Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, R Ramakhrishnan stated that the NSDMA collaborated with the Institution for Disaster, Emergency and Accidents (IDEA) from Gujarat and held a webinar at NSDMA Secretariat, Kohima to commemorate the day.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is celebrated every year since 1989 after a call by the UN General Assembly to promote a culture of risk awareness and risk reduction. This year’s theme aims at disaster risk governance as a tool to reduce the number of people affected by disaster and also to reduce economic loss, it said.

During the webinar, NSDMA Advisor Kazheto Kinimi (MLA) remarked that the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted countries globally and emphasised on the need for a clear vision to act on scientific evidence which can be achieved through Disaster Risk Governance. He also stressed on the need to look into the Sendai Framework for DRR (2015-2030).

According to the release, the inaugural and introductory remarks were given by Neelay Shrivastava, Director IDEA, while launch of Community Outreach Program (COP) was done by Pooja Saxena, DRR Lead at IDEA.

The launch of Online DRR quiz was done by Himani Tiwari, Research Analyst at IDEA and Lead UNICEF from Assam, Suresh spoke on UN International Children's Education fund. Other speakers included Dr Ritu Chauhan, Health Securities and Emergency Team of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Dr Shiela, SMO, Nagaland WHO. 

A brief talk on DRR activities in Nagaland was also given by Johnny Ruangmei, OSD, NSDMA, who also moderated a panel discussion by community on DRR, the release stated.
