Demands justice for Angel Chakma after racial murder
Kohima, January 3 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) on Saturday expressed “deep outrage, grief and condemnation” over the death of Angel Chakma (24), a student from Tripura, who succumbed to injuries sustained in an assault in Dehradun on December 9, 2025.
In a statement, NSF President Mteisuding and General Secretary Kenilo Kent described the incident as a “cold-blooded racial hate crime” and not an accident or misunderstanding. They stated that Angel Chakma and his brother, Michael Chakma, who was also assaulted, were targeted because they “looked different” and did not conform to a “so-called Aryan racial identity,” leading to racial slurs and “savage violence.”
The federation asserted that the killing is a “direct indictment of the Indian State’s failure to protect the people of Northeast,” highlighting decades of systematic dehumanization, stereotyping, harassment, and violence faced by the community across India. It dismissed government assurances and guidelines as “hollow” and “cosmetic,” alleging their failure to prevent such crimes. “This incident is a direct Indictment of the Indian State’s failure to protect the people of Northeast,” the federation stated.
NSF called upon all North Eastern states, student bodies, civil society organisations and political leadership to rise as one against this unrelenting racial violence. “The Northeast must unite, speak in one voice and resist being treated as second-class citizens.”
The federation demanded immediate and uncompromising intervention by the Government of India and the Government of Uttarakhand to ensure mental, social and physical security for students and residents from the North East in Dehradun and across the state.
Further, the federation demanded “capital punishment to the perpetrators of this heinous and racially motivated crime at the earliest” and set a clear precedent that racial violence will not be tolerated. “Justice delayed is justice denied, and the patience of the people of the Northeast is not infinite.”
Reiterating its stance, the NSF said, “We refuge to accept racism as normal. We refuse to let Angel Chakma's death be reduced to another statistic. Justice must be delivered, accountability must be fixed and racism must be confronted.”
