DIMAPUR, JANUARY 9 (MExN): The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has questioned the wisdom of the PDA government’s soft peddling on the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
Media Cell, NTC in a press statement on Wednesday wondered whether the government of the day understands the very purpose and the language of the Bill. It also wondered whether the government understands the ramification of the Bill.
Expressing dismay over the way the State Cabinet resolved on the Bill which is to request the Centre to re-examine and review the Bill in question- the NTC said this lukewarm decision of the Cabinet has isolated itself from other Northeastern states who have out rightly opposed the Bill.
It also reminded that the PDA had already decided not to oppose the Bill on June 5, 2018 and alleged that this decision is being upheld with the excuses that all political party meeting is to be convened ‘to examine the issue’ when the Bill is already on its way in the Parliament after clearances from the JPC and the Union Cabinet.
Terming such exercise as much behind the time and irrelevant, the NTC questioned on the determination of PDA in “protecting the settlement of illegal people in Nagaland at the cost of the future of the sons of the soil.”
The NTC further apprehended that once the Bill is enacted by both the houses of the Parliament, it will have far reaching consequences on weaker States particularly in NE, and Nagaland will be the victim merely due to the indifference attitude of the government.
It has therefore urged the Nagaland Government to come out clear on its policy and programme to tackle the impending threats of the day.
