NU raises awareness on global issue of plastic pollution

Lumami, April 22 (MExN): Earth Day 2024 was celebrated on the theme ‘Planet vs. Plastic,’ focusing on the urgent need to address the global issue of plastic pollution, at various campuses of Nagaland University, with the headquarters located in Lumami. 

The celebration took place at multiple campuses including Lumami, Kohima, and Medziphema, where students, faculty, and staff came together to raise awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability. Vice Chancellor Prof Jagadish Kumar Patnaik graced the occasion as the chief guest, emphasising the significance of Earth Day and the collective responsibility to protect our planet.

Nagaland University, English Department in collaboration with Rotary Club Kohima observed Earth Day at NU Kohima Campus, Meriema on April 22. Marking the day, fruit tree plantation at the English Department complex area and hill top was carried out by the Department headed by Professor Rosemary Dzuvichu, Nagaland University. The programme was marked by plantation of 70 Nagpur Orange saplings, 30 Mosambi grafted saplings and 10 Banana saplings.

The highlight of the event was lecture delivered by Prof PK Mishra, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT BHU, Varanasi, who addressed the audience through virtual mode. Prof Mishra shed light on the pressing issue of plastic pollution and the crucial steps needed to mitigate its adverse effects on the environment.

The welcome address was delivered by Prof Ashutosh Tripathi, Head of Department and Convenor of the Program, setting the tone for the day's activities. A short documentary video, prepared by Dr Ashutosh Tripathi, Department of Environmental Studies, was presented, providing insights into the impact of plastic pollution on ecosystems.

Dr Eliza Khwairakpam chaired the event and vote of thanks was extended by Dr Latonglila Jamir, Department of Environmental Studies.

During the closing ceremony, Prof MS Rawat, Dean of Sciences honoured the winners of the poster-making and model presentation competitions with prizes and certificates. The event was attended by guests, including Finance Officer N Albert Khizho and Prof Bendag Ao, along with other faculty members, officials, and staff. Saplings were planted in Kohima Campus by faculties and students.
