NVCO and KDTODU reiterate fight against illegal taxation

Kohima, December 21 (MExN): The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) along with the Kohima District Truck Owners and Drivers’ Union (KDTODU) conducted consumer awareness programme on illegal taxation especially at the check-gates and highways on the 4th day of the week-long observance of National Consumers Day at Kohima on December 21. 

Press & Media cell, NVCO in a press release stated that KDTODU, president Rüvese Sokha enquired about the report of the ‘Enquiry Committee’ constituted by the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima to check the illegal collection of cash at check gate and on Highway in and around Kohima. 

NVCO President, Advocate Kezhokhoto Savi, pointed out the government standing order dated June 22, 2009 bans collection of taxes by any organization or individual including government departments such as Police, Excise, Forest and Taxes Department, etc. Also the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench judgement and order dated June 3, 2014 disallows unions, federations, associations or societies from collecting cash on highways. 

During the event, NVCO distributed a booklet with information on the orders. It also informed that the latest NVCO book is under compilation.

Savi also urged the Enquiry Committee to thoroughly interrogate “Nagaland Police, Excise, Forest, Society, MV, Union, Geology & Mining, Federation, and Public Organization” and also to “investigate the officials of All Manipur Transport Drivers & Motor Workers’ Union for their initiative in illegal collection of cash on the highways of Nagaland especially in the Southern Angami area.”

“This is required to completely stop all collections of cash at the check-gates and highways in the state,” Savi stated while urging the District Administration, Dimapur to stop all sorts of illegal collection of cash and tax especially at the check-gates and on highways.
