
Kohima, March 12 (MExN): As part of the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) two week-long celebration of World Consumer Rights Day, the NVCO stressed on the importance of the Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 based on the Consumers’ Right to Safety.
The Press & Media Cell, NVCO in a press release stated that the Act aims to consolidate the laws relating to food and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of sale and wholesome food for human consumption in the country.
The NVCO President, Kezhokhoto Savi has made an appeal to the consumers/citizens to be always alert and check the date of manufactured/packing and expiry date before buying any food items. It is also very important to check medicines/drugs whether it was manufactured from a reputed company in order to avoid duplication or inferior quality, he stated. Consumers are to be very careful about the excessive use of fertilizers in fruits and vegetables, steroid in meat, formalin in fish, etc, etc, he added.
The NVCO said that the State Consumer Helpline with Toll Free No. 1800 – 345 – 3701 functions as an alternate remedy mechanism and therefore, for any consumer grievances one can call up the Toll Free – 1800-345-3701 during the office hour.
