Octogenarian couple’s house razed

Mokokchung | July 3 : A house was completely destroyed by fire today at Süngratsü village, about 18 kilometres north of Mokokchung town. The house, belonging to an octogenarian couple, was primarily a wooden building and the cause of the fire that razed down the house to ashes is not known. However, the villagers ascertain that the fire could have been caused by a electrical short circuit. The owner of the two-storey wooden building, Kilangtemjan Imchen, 82, said that he and his wife were attending Church service when the house was burnt down.
A neighbour is said to have first seen the fire while he was returning home after attending ABAM Youth Sunday Church service. The whole villagers were at Church when the fire broke out and therefore could not help douse off the fire in time, the villagers say. Sunday Church service begins at 9:30 am in the village and the fire is believed to have started at around 10:00 o’clock. The villagers estimate that property worth at least ten lakhs rupees was lost in the fire. The owner, an ex-service man, said that not a single item could be salvaged and that he had lost everything, including his all important documents. Fire Brigade stationed at Mokokchung town, after learning belated information, rushed to the scene but it was too late by then.
