Official calls for greater welfare access for widows in Shamator

Shamator, June 23 (MExN): District Programme Officer (DPO), Social Welfare, Renchano Odyuo, called for greater access to social support systems and government welfare schemes for widows while highlighting the need to safeguard their dignity and promote their empowerment.

She was speaking at the observance of International Widows’ Day organised by the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Mission for Welfare Foundation (MWF), at the Cultural Hall, Shamator Town, on June 23.

The programme was held under the theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows.”

As part of the observance, awareness was created on women-centric initiatives of the Department of Social Welfare, including the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) and schemes under Mission Shakti. The event also provided assistance for Aadhaar updates and on-the-spot registration of eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), besides distributing sanitary products.

Deputy Commissioner of Shamator, Arikumba, attended the programme as the special guest. The programme was chaired by K Kamjila and began with an invocation by Tsukhumla, Women Director, STBC. Managing Director of Mission for Welfare Foundation, Kaisa Akiu, delivered the welcome address.

The observance also featured a special musical presentation by C Rukila and a prayer for widows led by Naomi, Women Secretary, YBBA. The vote of thanks was proposed by Kiuthsangla Hankiu.
