The present practice of land reclamation for construction of buildings along NH 39 between Dimapur and Chumukedima is posing a serious threat to the safety of the highway and therefore the welfare of the public in general. As we all have seen, ten years back on both sides of the road used to be marshy land. Throughout this section of the highway rampant construction has been going on for the past few years. The construction process starts after filling the marshy land. In most cases the land fill invariably is above the level of the highway. When this happens on both sides of the highway water logging occurs. Very specifically, water logging can now be observed at two places in Purana Bazaar the first Popular Bakery and the second one opposite Hollotoli School. The portion in front of Nungshi’s building in 2 ½ mile is also water logged.
It has been observed that wherever there is water logging the road invariably gets damaged. The most serious situation is visible near Popular Bakery. No amount of repair work is going to solve the problem unless there is an outlet of rain water. It is therefore suggested that for NH 39 stringent laws for any kind of construction and land fills should be enacted if not done yet. In doing so, it should be ensured that no land fill should be allowed to come above road level.
