Only 1% IDD endemic rate prevalence in state

Dimapur | February 6 : According to the data made available by the department of Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland, under its National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control programme random survey conducted has shown prevalence IDD endemic rate of only 1% in the state which showed a dramatic improvement of the IDD situation in the state.
National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control programme under Health & Family Welfare is a 100% CSS implemented in the State through its IDD cell. Nagaland was declared as one of the IDD endemic states in India with a prevalence rate of 33.4% through abase line survey in the early 1960s. State IDD cell was established in 1987 and since then IEC activities for creating awareness on the consequences of IDDs cell was established in 1987 and since then IEC activities for creating awareness on the consequences of IDDs and also importance of consuming iodised salt were conducted. Random survey conducted in the recent past has recorded a prevalence rate of rate of only 1% in the State showing a dramatic improvement of the IDD situation in the State.
Some of the significant goals of NIDDCP are to achieve universal access of Iodized salt; Generate district- wise data on iodized salt consumption and Reduction in the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorder in the state to less then 10% by 2010.
The objectives are to conduct survey to identify magnitude of problem in the State; produce and supply of iodize salt in place of common salt; provide Health Education & Publicity (IEC); undertake monitoring of the quality of iodated salt assessing urinary iodine excretion pattern and monitoring of Iodine deficiency disorder and resurvey in goiter endemic areas after five years continuous supply of iodize salt to access the impact of control programme.
