Orgs denounce violence at Lamhai Namdi; demands justice

Dimapur, March 23 (MExN): Following the March 22 incident where three persons were killed in a shooting suspected to be connected to land dispute in Peren district, various organizations have condemned event. They decried the killing of three individuals and burning of properties at Lamhai Namdi village under Peren district on March 22. 

NMA: The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) is its condemnation note stated “as women and mothers,” made a fervent appeal all citizens to shun violence and killings.

The NMA appealed all national workers not to indulge in any land disputes. “Let there be recognition of rights and peace through peaceful dialogue and not through the barrel of guns. As victims of conflict we appeal that initiatives for peace be upheld for the sake of the people, the unarmed population whose lives and property are endangered through such violent incidents,” it stated. 

The association also appealed to the State Government to ensure that safety, security and respect for precious human lives is upheld and take strong preventives measures to prevent recurrence of violence and killings in the State. 

“We demand the law enforcing agencies to punish the perpetrators according to law and ensure that rule of law prevails,” it added while urging all citizens to maintain peace and exercise utmost restraint and avoid spreading of rumours, provocative comments to avoid further escalation of tension.

NMA also conveyed condolence to the family members. 

NIPF: The Nagaland Indigenous People's Forum (NIPF) while extending condolences to the bereaved families, the NIPF asserted that it does not subscribe to the idea of violence of any form to solve any dispute. It appealed for people to show utmost restraint and solve disputes through cordial discussions and to denounce violence.

ZOAN: The Zeliang Officers’ Association Nagaland (ZOAN) condemning the incident has requested the law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits to justice at the earliest possible time. It also prayed for comfort and solace to the bereaved families. 

TUD: The Tangkhul Union Dimapur (TUD) in its condemnation note said that “the Naga story is replete with violence but we have come a long way in bringing about an end to the violence amongst fellow Naga brethrens. Monday’s unfortunate incident however gives us flashbacks of the internecine fratricidal killings of the past wherein thousands of Nagas have lost their lives.”

TUD, President, Ayo Vashum said, ‘this very disturbing development has potential to explode into further ‘tit for tat’ violence – uncontrollable like in the past - as passions boil over.” 

It urged for restraint and called for better sense to prevail. It also called upon the law enforcing agencies to ensure that the culprits are booked at the earliest and that speedy justice is delivered. The Union also extended its condolences. 

TSUD: The Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur (TSUD) expressed shocked on the details of the March 22 incident. “The use of automatic arms clearly shows that it is the handiwork of some anti social elements hell-bent on creating tension and disturbing peaceful coexistence amongst the Naga family. There is no place for such barbaric actions in a civilized society,” the union stated. 

TSUD appealed to the law enforcing agencies and the government to leave no stone unturned in arresting the perpetrators and award befitting punishment. It also appealed to the leaders of Naga communities to solve any issue with wisdom amicably and not to encourage any sort of violence. TSUD extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and solidarity to Zeliang brothers.

DNSU: The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) in its condemnation note said that “there is no room for such a heartless criminals in this modern society. No individuals involved in this barbaric killing should be left unpunished.”
While extending its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the Union urges the law enforcing agency to take up the issue with utmost important and act swiftly to book the culprits without delay. 
The Union further appeal the public to abstain from instigating communal hatred and let the law take its own course of action.
