NSUG asks Nagaland Govt to provide transportation home
DIMAPUR, MAY 28 (MExN): The Naga Students Union Gujarat (NSUG) has written to the Nagaland Chief Minister appealing for transportation of stranded Nagas in Gujarat back to Nagaland.
The NSUG informed that there are over 1,200 stranded Naga citizens in Gujarat and they are facing “unprecedented issues and challenges with every passing day.”
“Our people are in constant fear of getting evicted. Landlords are forcing our brothers and sisters to leave and go to their respective states. The student union leaders are requesting the landlords for extension but we have reached a point where the extension period that we have requested has already passed,” the NSUG said.
It informed that the union is handling cases that range from “landlords locking our people in their flats to ensure that they don’t go out due to non-payment of rent to landlords turning off the water and electricity.”
There are even cases where landlords and company owners are forcefully asking them to go out and work in order to earn. Most of these groups of people were working in salons, spas, restaurants, hotels, hospitality companies and other unorganized sectors. Their rations and savings are running out, the NSUG informed.
It further informed that people of all other North Eastern states have left Gujarat. Train for Agartala, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh left from Ahmedabad on May 25.
“Those who were staying jointly with people from other North Eastern states would be under pressure to either pay rent or vacate,” it stated.
The union meanwhile said that it has been working in the frontlines for stranded Nagaland citizens exposing themselves to more dangers every day.
“We have lost two unfortunate souls during the lockdown period and earnestly pray that we will not be experiencing such incident again. We appeal to you to speed up the process, provide us with proper information and respond to our queries at the earliest,” it appealed.
