DIMAPUR, OCT 2 (MExN): A drought situation in Dimapur District has left a total of 167 villages affected. An official assessment made by the district’s agricultural department places the estimated loss of crop production at 24570 metric tonnes, indicating a ballpark loss of Rs 12.79 crore. A statement issued today by the district’s Agricultural Officer, Nguzonyi Wetsah, said at least 30% of the total crop area has been severely affected by the drought.
As a result of the Khariff Crop failure due to the dry spell, a tendency towards starvation and famine condition for farmers in rural areas has arisen, unless emergency measures and steps of contingency plan are taken up at the government level for Rabi cropping with suitable crops like mustard, linseed and vegetables along with construction of shallow tube wells.
