An overview of economy in Phek district

Phek | July 12 : Phek district having an area of 2026 sq KM stands at an altitude of 1524 metre above sea level. The district has five rural development (RD) blocks comprises of 104 recognized villages. The jhum cultivation and terrace cultivation which is the main occupation for the people of the district constantly predominates the economy with agricultural activities. As per the 2001 census, the district comprising of two communities viz; Chakhesang and Pochury with 148195 population with a density of 73 persons per square kilometres while the decennial growth rate is measured at a percentage of 45.07.
According to the report of statistical department sex ratio female percentage of 100 male stands at 938 in rural area and 757 in urban area. The literacy percentage which stands at 71.35 is further categorized with male at 78.97 and 63.08 female.
The district which recorded total workers with 57.594% is further grouped as 6.365% and 7.671% male and female respectively under marginal workers. It has further categorized 39.700% male and 36.926% under non-workers sector. Being an agricultural base land a record of 23.08% male and 29.014% female is found to be a cultivator and 740 male and 621 female as an agri-labour.
However, as per the practical observation of the present scenario, with a higher degree in cultivation prospect by assisting man-force with machine tools it is expected that the present trend of economy will rose to a higher level. The present use of technologies such as power tiller distributed to the farming communities by the DAN government is up-grading the agricultural activities.
