Chümoukedima, March 29 (MExN): The Department of Mass Communication, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), organised an interactive session on screenplay, cinematography and sound on March 28, bringing together industry professionals to share insights into filmmaking and storytelling.
The session, held at the Conference Hall, featured resource persons Sunny Daimari, director of photography and visual arts professional; Achie Humtsoe, director and screenwriter; and Harsyajit Kr Goyary, sound designer and mixer. All three are alumni of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
The discussion focused on filmmaking, storytelling and media production, offering students exposure to both creative and technical aspects of cinema.
Humtsoe, who is also making his directorial debut with a short film, shared his personal connection with the college and said it continues to inspire his writing. He emphasised that filmmaking demands dedication, creativity and consistent effort, encouraging students to think critically by identifying the core subject of a narrative and addressing challenges in the writing process.
Highlighting the broader role of cinema, the speakers described films as “freezing a moment in time,” underscoring their ability to express emotions and convey meaningful messages. They noted that filmmakers often approach storytelling with varied intentions, aiming to evoke specific emotional responses from audiences.
On managing creative differences between screenwriters and directors, the speakers said such differences are natural, but the director acts as the “captain of the ship,” responsible for ensuring coherence in the final output. While filmmaking has no rigid rules, they added, certain guidelines help structure the creative process effectively.
The session also covered technical aspects, including the use of the clapper board for synchronising sound and visuals and providing key information to editors. The speakers emphasised that a screenplay is a technical document that guides the entire production process.
Sharing insights into sound design, they highlighted the critical role of sound and music in enhancing emotional impact and storytelling.
To broaden perspectives, the speakers recommended films such as Nobody Knows and Little Miss Sunshine, encouraging students to explore diverse genres.
They further urged aspiring filmmakers to take small steps, consider institutions like FTII, and pursue their creative ambitions with confidence, informed a press release from the college.
